East Berlin 1973: The survivor of the Holocaust Arno Bronstein (Armin Mueller-Stahl) kidnaps the old SS-officer Heppner (Rolf Hoppe) with the help of two former inmates. In a small cottage the men keep the ex-guard of a concentration camp imprisoned and interrogate him until he confesses to have witnessed executions. Bronstein’s son Martin (Matthias Paul) accidentally learns about this secret trial and becomes a witness to the self-destructive revenge of his father. The young man, who grew up in a communist environment never actually saw himself as the son of a victim. He finds himself unable to hate the culprit and desperately wants to save his father from himself. In the end, Martin makes the decision to free the prisoner.
